[ARTICLE] Kingwell on the US in Iraq

Surprisingly enough, from the National Post:

In empire’s heart of darkness

Mark Kingwell
National Post

Wednesday, May 28, 2003

Nobody should be surprised that post-invasion Iraq is a shambles, since that is exactly what both previous experience and logic demanded. After all, killing people is easier than ruling them. Nobody should be surprised, but still they are.

Recent cracks in the diplomatic edifice, with State Department lifers squaring off against ideologues from the White House, are just the most obvious signs of trouble. Ambassador Paul Bremer, the top civilian authority in American-controlled Iraq, was parachuted into the job after a behind-the-scenes struggle over the harsh direction of American efforts. Who needs diplomacy when you have Special Forces?

Notes

  • I got five extra hours of work Thursday. This equates to a sum of roughly some 70 dollars, which is roughly half of the cost of my train ticket between Toronto and Kingston last month. I am anticipating having more time today. That was a nice thing to think about during my gym workout that evening; that, and Ladurie’s famous historical study Montaillou, concerning the Cathar-influenced peasants of the Languedocian village of that name in the first decade of the 14th century. (Review of Montaillou coming.)
  • I’m planning on going next Wednesday to a get-together of Island bloggers coordinated by Charlottetown’s own Will Pate. Others on the Island probably should come if you want to upgrade;
  • Oh, and I got linked to by the blog Voyage in Arcturus, referencing my space colonization posting. (Part 2 very soon.)

TV Shows

  • Monday evening, I watched an episode of Queer as Folk. It was enjoyable, but I remain confused as to how I (from QAF‘s core demographic) am supposed to relate to the show.
  • Tuesday evening, I watched an episode of The Wire in the Blood, an adaptation of a murder-mystery series by Val McDermid. It was entertaining, gory and psycho-crazy while remaining relatively intelligent.

Pop Will Eat Itself

This is scary.

From MTV.com:

Avril’s Tale Of Sk8er Boi Meets Girl Optioned For Movie

Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi” may soon shredding the silver screen.

Paramount Pictures has optioned the Let Go hit for a feature film, according to Lavigne’s publicist. Writer David Zabel, whose previous television credits include work for “ER,” “Jag” and “Dark Angel,” will translate the song’s lyrics into a full-length movie, and MTV Films and Alphaville will produce the prospective flick, according to industry trade The Hollywood Reporter.

Changes

You know, I’d forgotten about this, and how much I meant it at the time and still do, now.

Time to make some more positive changes in my life. 🙂

[ARTICLE] The Decline of the Canadian Conservative Press

From the London Free Press:

National Post looks ready for last rites

Herman Goodden, London Free Press

The death watch seems to be on again at the National Post. The latest slide toward oblivion for the five-year-old conservative national newspaper started, appropriately enough, on May Day — that day of political hubris when the leaders of the Soviet Kremlin used to ritualistically haul out all their weaponry and march it around Red Square in a mighty display of brute force designed to keep all their quivering underlings in line.

This time, standing in for the stone-faced Soviet bosses was Canada’s Winnipeg-based Asper family. Longtime owners of CanWest Global Communications, the Aspers may understand TV but have appeared dense and ham-handed — completely out of their depth and their happiest milieu — ever since taking control of the National Post and 13 other Canadian dailies they picked up from expatriate Canadian press baron Conrad Black for $3.2 billion as he headed off to England to pick up a peerage in July of 2000.

neo
You are Neo, the chosen one, the slayer of agents
everywhere. A former nerd, you have evolved
into quite a stubborn hero.
Although Trinity is not that hot, at least you’re
one of the few that can get some in the real
world.
You can stop bullets and you’re immmortal; so what
the hell are you going to do in Matrix:
Reloaded?!

“Yeah. Wow, that sounds like a really good
deal. But I think I got a better one. How about
I give you the finger… and you give me my
phone call.”
