[MUSIC] Martha and the Muffins, “Echo Beach”

While listening to the occasionally irritatingly cheerful and perky Shelagh Rogers on CBC Radio’s program Sounds Like Canada this morning, I heard her interview with Martha Johnson and Mark Gane of the Canadian group. I only began to pay close attention to the interview, though, when I heard the jerky guitar and vocals of their 1980 international hit “Echo Beach”.

This wasn’t the first time that I’d heard “Echo Beach” on Sounds Like Canada, since Jian Ghomeshi made a successful pitch for its inclusion on CBC’s 50 Tracks listing of essential Canadian songs. The music is good–the early synth, the punk aesthetic, Martha’s inhumanly controlled vocals–but the lyrics, as always, are what sell me on the song.

From nine ’til five I have to spend my time at work
The job is very boring, I’m an office clerk
The only thing that helps me pass the time away
Is knowing I’ll be back at Echo Beach some day

I freely grant that a position as an office clerk would be a step up for me. Even so, I get the song.
